Tax Issues with Divorce

There are certainly tax & accounting implications associated with Divorce that should be considered as part of every settlement or trial. Specifically, alimony, property distribution, child support, child dependency exemptions, filing status (head of household or single) itemized deductions (mortgage and interest on the marital home) and retirement distributions. If working together parties can certainly structure settlement agreements to minimize the tax liability associated with their divorce. Although I am certainly prohibited, as a mediator, from giving tax advice, I certainly, as a CPA  (Licensed in Virginia), can assist both parties in reaching a settlement agreement that is tax advantageous to both parties thereby saving more money for the family unit.
